Intellectual Asset Management (IAM) hosted the IP Business Congress Asia (IPBC Asia) from 17th to 19th November 2013 at the five-star Pan Pacific Hotel, Singapore. Focusing on the business of intellectual property across the region, the event comprised three days of high-level discussion and unparalleled networking opportunities, bringing together senior thought leaders from the Asia-Pacific region, Europe and North America.

The IPBC Asia is the only event in the region to focus on how rights owners can strategically use intellectual property to secure greater operational flexibility, drive revenues, enhance bottom-line returns, increase shareholder value and provide greater leverage in the financial markets.

Sessions at the IPBC Asia 2013 explored cutting-edge issues in value creation, while the speaking faculty included the IPBC’s core audience of chief IP officers and heads of intellectual property from major IP-owning companies, plus key members of the global commercialisation and monetisation community. The event also featured set-piece debates, roundtables and a host of networking opportunities. Throughout the event, there was a special focus on the opportunities, challenges and potential pitfalls that IP value creators may encounter in the Asia-Pacific region.

Background

Since it was launched in Amsterdam in 2008, the IPBC has established itself as the world’s principal forum for discussion of the issues surrounding IP value creation. As recent IPBCs have shown – whether held in Lisbon, Beijing or Boston – the event’s format works because it brings together the most senior representatives from across the IP industry and the world not just to discuss IP business, but also to do deals.

IAM is universally acknowledged as the world’s leading IP business publication. IAM was launched in July 2003 to address the need for organisations to maximise the value of their intellectual property and other intangibles, and to examine the strategies that they can put in place to do this. IAM is unique because it treats intellectual property as a business asset and tool, rather than simply as a legal right. With this unequalled appeal to the boardroom, IAM has firmly established itself as the only IP publication that many senior corporate executives read regularly.

Using our world-class corporate, financial, intermediary and legal contacts, a faculty of speakers was assembled for the IPBC Asia 2013. It was made up of individuals in charge of intellectual property at some of the world’s most forward-thinking companies – both large and small, Asian and international – as well as global IP thought leaders and senior policy makers from around the world. Their unique insights and experiences, presented in both plenary and breakout sessions, provided delegates with a thorough understanding of the principles that underpin the development of IP value creation strategies, as well as the many challenges – actual and future – that IP-owning companies face.

The IPBC Asia is focused on two key groups: chief IP officers, heads of intellectual property and their equivalents at major enterprises, and leading IP investors, aggregators, intermediaries and international regulators.

Asia has become an undisputed global innovation hub. From emerging domestic enterprises to established household names, Asian companies are taking centre stage as the balance of economic power shifts eastwards. As they stake their claims in the global marketplace, ensuring that they have the necessary expertise to create, manage, commercialise and drive strategic value from their intellectual property will be vital to their continued success.

In the lead-up to the inaugural IP Business Congress Asia, the IAM editorial team identified the Asia IP Elite: those companies that consistently put intellectual property at the very heart of their overall corporate decision making and, as a result, substantially enhance their overall business strategies.

The exhaustive research process was based around close examination of multiple data points, as well as hundreds of interviews with senior IP professionals both in Asia and beyond. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that such research has been undertaken.

The Asia IP Elite were honoured at a gala dinner held during the IPBC Asia on 18th November at the Pan Pacific Hotel in Singapore.
