Embracing the New Normal

The overview

IPBC Global 2016 took place in Barcelona from June 5 to 7 at the prestigious Hotel Arts. Recently named as the world’s “Most Wired City” and the home of the GSMA Mobile World Congress, Barcelona is a major technology hub and an ideal location for the ninth IPBC Global – the world’s leading event focusing on the business of IP value creation.

IPBC Global 2016 took place at a time of continuing evolution in the international IP market. Not only will the launch of the EU unitary patent and the Unified Patent Court encourage the further development of patent-based transactions and financings in Europe, but an increasing number of companies in Asia are focusing on the acquisition of rights to enable freedom to operate in new territories, as well as looking to secure returns on large procurement budgets through the development of sophisticated licensing and sales programmes.

Alongside these developments, though, are others that point to a more collaborative approach to IP value creation. Traditional assertion-based monetisation models are coming under pressure as courts, regulators and legislators make life harder for patent owners in a variety of ways. Operating companies and non-practising entities (NPEs) alike are exploring new business models involving technology licensing, commercialisation, spin-outs and other IP-based business partnerships, while new sectors – such as the Internet of Things and the Cloud – encourage strategies that actively encompass multiple forms of intellectual property.

For chief IP officers – the key demographic at every IPBC event – all this means that the challenges are becoming more complicated and the solutions much more sophisticated. Join us in Barcelona to explore the ways in which the IP industry’s thought leaders are adapting to this changing world, as well as to learn how they see it developing further over the coming years.

Broad-picture plenary sessions combined with more tightly focused afternoon breakouts, alongside a host of formal and informal networking opportunities, will ensure that IPBC Global 2016 is a conference that meets the needs of a high-level delegate base – one which understands that intellectual property is a pivotal 21st century business asset.

IPBC Global 2016 provided unrivalled opportunities to discuss cutting-edge issues and network with the people who make the world’s IP weather.

Sector quotas

The last IPBC Global took place in San Francisco in June 2015 and attracted a sell-out crowd of over 680 attendees. As has become standard IPBC policy, we operated a sector quota system in order to guarantee a variety of outlooks and experiences among delegates. This will be repeated for Barcelona in 2016, with quotas for the following:

  • Intermediaries and investors
  • NPEs and aggregators
  • Policy makers and academics
  • Private practice lawyers, patent and trademark attorneys
  • Other service providers

There will be no limit on attendees from operating companies.

Once we hit a quota limit, we will be unable to offer a place at IPBC Global 2016 to those from the relevant sector looking to register for the event. Thus, anyone wishing to attend is strongly advised to secure a place as early as possible.

The host

IAM is universally acknowledged as the world’s leading IP business media platform. It was launched as a magazine in July 2003 to address the need for organisations to maximise the value of their intellectual property and other intangibles, and to examine the strategies they can put in place to do this. IAM now produces a wide range of publications, as well as a weekly email and daily blog.

IAM is unique because it treats intellectual property as a business asset and tool, rather than simply as a legal right. With this unequalled appeal to the boardroom, IAM has established itself as the only IP publication that many senior corporate executives read regularly.

Using our world-class corporate, financial, intermediary and legal contacts, a high-level faculty of speakers is once again being assembled for IPBC Global 2016. It will comprise individuals in charge of intellectual property and some of the world’s most forward-thinking companies, both large and small; investors; senior aggregators; policy makers, legal experts and intermediaries. Their unique insights and experiences, presented in both our plenary and breakout sessions, will provide delegates with a thorough understanding of the principles that lie behind the development of IP value creation strategies, as well as the many challenges – actual and future – that IP-owning companies face.

The IP Hall of Fame

The IP Hall of Fame honours those who have made an outstanding contribution to the global IP market. Devised and developed by IAM, it identifies individuals who have helped to establish intellectual property as one of the key business assets of the 21st century. The aim is not only to acknowledge the vital role played by these innovators in fostering today’s vibrant IP environment and ensuring its continued health, but also to show how central intellectual property is to the global economy and to the wellbeing of people around the world.

The IP Hall of Fame welcomes new inductees annually. Via the nomination process, anyone in the global IP community can put forward a name to be considered by the IP Hall of Fame Academy, comprising all living IP Hall of Fame inductees and specially invited international IP thought leaders. A full list of Academy members can be found at www.iphalloffame.com/Academy.aspx.

In Barcelona, a special plenary session on the morning of June 7 will see 2016’s inductees welcomed in the pantheon, before a panel of previous inductees takes part in a high-level discussion focusing on some of the key issues facing IP owners and their representatives. The insights shared during this unique debate will be among the highlights of the event.

If you want to join them and many other of the world’s leading IP business thought leaders for three days of high-level debate that focuses on corporate IP value creation, then you cannot afford to miss IPBC Global 2016.
